Doris Hakim was born in Nazareth to a Palestinian father and a Greek mother. She studied in a Jewish school, which played an important and significant role in her artistic quest, triggering her to explore the effect and concept of society, religion, politics and identity, focusing on the meaning of issues such as democracy, equality, and boundaries. These explorations along with her personal background have become an integral part of her artistic practice.
Hakim left Israel and moved to Greece at the age of 20. She studied first Theology and after a few years, Fine Arts. After moving to Spain she continued with an MA degree and now doing her PhD titled: Contemporary gender art by women with dual nationality/identity: the case of Arab women with western identity. Analysis of this influence in their artistic works, since the 1980s.
Hakim’s “complex” and diverse origin takes into account both the richness and the violence of the cultural context she grew into. She deals with these issues in an attempt to reconcile with her culture and its socio-political boundaries, all the while engaging herself in the culture of others, out of doubt and curiosity on one hand, and the desire to stimulate a human, cultural discussion on the other.
The abuse of religious, political and psychological power, is dominating her art, through the hiding and revealing of symbols. Therefore, in a world full of symbols, archetypes and myths, she is not only fascinated, but uses it as a stimulating tool for her projects.
Doris Hakim nació en Nazaret (Israel), de padre palestino y madre griega, estudió en una escuela judía, lo que jugó un papel importante en su búsqueda artística y le empujó a explorar el efecto y el concepto de sociedad, religión y política, identidad que se convirtió en parte integral de su trabajo.
Se trasladó de Israel a Grecia a la edad de 20 años. Su primer grado fue en teología, realizado en la Universidad Kapodistriana, en Atenas. Después de algunos años decidió estudiar bellas artes en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de Atenas. Durante su Licenciatura, experimentó en campos tales como la pintura, escultura, fotografía, instalaciones, performance, y con el sonido. En 2017 graduó del máster de bellas artes de la universidad de Sevilla. La idea de interacción en el espacio público con los ciudadanos, es un método que utilizó para reflexionar sobre nuestra cultura contemporánea – un vínculo entre el artista y la comunidad.
Su origen “complejo” y diverso, teniendo en cuenta tanto la riqueza como la violencia del contexto cultural, siempre fue una “herramienta” para el nacimiento de nuevos proyectos y colaboraciones.
Curriculum Vitae
1989-1993 Graduated from the National Kapodistrian University of Athens from the Faculty of Theology (Bachelor in Theology).
2004-2011 Graduated from Athens School of Fine Arts, Painting Department (Degree in Visual Arts).
2016-2017 Graduated with honors degree from the University of Seville at the Master program “Art, Production and Idea”, Faculty of Fine Arts, and winner of the extraordinary prize of the University of Seville for the Master´s degree.
2018-2019 Honorary assistant at the Master Program of the Faculty of Fine Arts of Seville.
Currently started her PhD on Arab women artists with dual identity/nationality.
