Homage to Magritte “This is not a pipe”, 1928-9. What is evident in an image or a symbol?
Foucault and Magritte, speaking on the subject of language and words (rather, criticizing) argue that signs or images are circumstantial, conventional and arbitrary. The painting dissolves any connection we might be inclined to make between sign and referent, or between signifier and signified.
Between words and objects one can create new relations and specify characteristics of language and objects.
Words are not bound directly to other pictorical elements, and as Foucault wrote, “Magritte allows the old space of representation to rule, but only the surface, no more than a polished stone, bearing words and shapes: beneath, nothing. It is a gravestone.”
