The Treachery of Symbols

The presence of the Symbols in every human activity is constant throughout the centuries. Their power and meaning always had a decisive contribution for the evolution of human thought and knowledge. The presence of a symbol can determine a certain role in human behavior.
Symbols also serve as a communication code and require special ways of handling in order to fulfill the purpose of their creation.
The symbol, whose meaning sometimes is also ambiguous, refers to a whole class of objects, as it is founded on a relation of ‘open meaning’ that is not determined by a codified rule.
In the framework of my present work I suggest an “interplay” with the symbols (whether religious, or political …). Thus, I subvert their forms and meanings, and try to see (and show) things from a different angle applying to them a different interpretation.
Taking the main sacred symbols of the three monotheistic religions of the Middle East, Judaism, Christianism and Islam, I convert their use, giving them another form. The wooden crosses form the word Allah, the Mezuza a cross and verses of the Koran a David star.

La presencia de los símbolos en cada actividad humana es constante a lo largo de los siglos. Su poder y significado siempre han tenido una contribución decisiva para la evolución del pensamiento y el conocimiento humano. La presencia de un símbolo puede determinar un cierto papel en el comportamiento humano.
Los símbolos sirven también como un código de comunicación y requieren formas especiales de manejo con el fin de cumplir con el propósito de su creación.
El símbolo, cuyo significado en ocasiones es ambiguo, se refiere a toda una clase de objetos, ya que tiene su origen en una relación de ‘significado abierto” que no está determinado por una regla codificada.
En la estructura de mi obra actual sugiero una “interacción” con los símbolos (ya sea religiosa o política …). Subvirtiendo sus formas y significados, trato de ver (y mostrar) las cosas desde un punto de vista diferente aplicando a los símbolos una interpretación diferente.
Mi proyecto continúa trabajando sobre el símbolo sagrado de cada una de las tres religiones monoteístas; judaísmo, cristianismo e islam a las que altero su formato y su forma. He realizado la palabra Alá con cruces, una cruz con la Mezuza y una estrella de David con las páginas del Corán.
